Dealing with British weather

Dressing for the UK weather takes a bit of practice, but it mainly requires proper gear and preparation for sudden rain showers.

Your wardrobe

☔️ Layering is key! Don't rely on just one raincoat. Wear a breathable T-shirt as a base, followed by a hoodie or jumper (sweater), and top with your waterproof or heavy winter coat to keep you warm outside.

☔️ Proper footwear: You might find it comfy wearing your Nike Air Forces around until you step in a puddle and your socks are soaking wet for the rest of the day. Invest in a good pair of shoes for the days when the weather isn't so good.

☔️ Waterproofs > umbrellas: Get yourself a proper, high-quality waterproof jacket. A sturdy waterproof bag is equally important to keep your laptop and study notes dry when walking around campus.

☔️ Accessories: A warm hat (beanie) and a thick scarf are non-negotiable when the temperature drops!

Dressing for the seasons

❄️ Winter: The UK's winter is notorious for being very chilly and wet, so layer up! Warm clothing like sweaters, gloves, joggers (sweatpants) and thick coats is perfect. To keep your feet warm and toasty, wear a pair of thick, fluffy socks as well as boots.

🍃 Spring/Autumn: Bring breathable, light clothing for spring and autumn, like long-sleeved shirts, lightweight jackets, and trousers. Temperatures can change a lot in these seasons - it can be a good time to start shopping for summer in spring, as everything is on sale and sometimes the UK will have a random heatwave in April!

☀️ Summer: Once again, the temperatures can range a lot, going from mild winds to UV 6. For comfort in the sunshine, bring shorts, T-shirts, light dresses and breathable materials.

Top Tip: In winter, shop around for a small desk fan/portable fan for the summer. The prices are reduced a lot in the colder seasons, and it can get warm on campus in summer.
